Description
Many hold a deep fascination with Mormonism but erroneously think of it as a secret religion that celebrates polygamy and confinement. Most outsiders regard Latter-day Saint women as submissive and pitiable. In The Sisterhood, award-winning author Dorothy Allred Solomon takes us inside the lives of women of the faith. She focuses on the roles of Mormon women in the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries, including fascinating personal stories about family, children, and husbands. She takes us into the lives of the High Priestesses of the Church, draws on histories sustained by the most thorough genealogical records in the world, and addresses the wives of polygamists. The Sisterhood sheds light on an expanding and complex religion and offers a long overdue portrait of Mormonism and women.

Praise for The Sisterhood: Inside the Lives of Mormon Women…
Praise for Daughter of the Saints: "Admirable and appealing..."--Francine Prose, O Magazine "The best book ever written about polygamy..."--Salt Lake City Tribune "A remarkably honest account..."--Library Journal (starred review) "A remarkable tale. . . .[Solomon] is outspoken and frank"--The New York Times "She has produced a book sprinkled with both beauty and 'indelible sadness,' leaving readers convinced that other counts of Mormon polygamy are hopelessly reductive."--Boston Sunday Globe, Recommended "Solomon tells her astonishing tale with so much emotional clarity and raw honesty that the Utah dirt she played in seems wedged between the pages..."--Publishers Weekly "Dorothy Solomon's deep and compassionate look at women's commitment to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is a wondrous gift. She asks the questions many of us ask of our own faiths and those of others: can we turn a clear and critical eye on faith and still be faithful? Perhaps even more difficult, can we admit areas of discomfort with the institution of faith--the church itself--and still find a home within it? As Solomon charts her own journey with these questions through her personal experiences and those of innumerable other Mormon women, she illuminates the possiblities of faith for us all."--Teresa Jordan, author of Riding the White Horse Home"Dorothy Solomon is one of the most gifted and insightful writers in Mormondom today. Loyal to the mainstream church and respectful of the fundamentalist branch from which she came, Dorothy shares in The Sisterhood a unique and tender vision of the women in the Mormon movement whose power has long been underestimated."--Carol Lynn Pearson, author of Mother Wove the Morning
