Chris Cleave, novelist and columnist for The Guardian newspaper in London, reads from Little Bee, to be released in paperback February 16, 2010. Booksigning to follow.
"There are books that make you think, and books that make you feel. Then
there are those that do both. Little Bee not only does this, but does
it on a level beyond high. This book just about tore my heart out, and the twisting,
turning, edge-of-your-seat one moment then sighing-with-relief the next
ending left me staring blankly at the last page, trying to process it
all. Its parts are
great -- immigration, identity, love, loss, family, atrocity, hope,
despair -- but the sum is so much greater. What I can tell you is that
this book will shift your perspectives, tickle your funny bone, light
up dark corners of society, then pull you into further darkness before
finding the light again." --Jenn Northington
Cleave's debut novel Incendiary won a 2006 Somerset Maugham Award and was shortlisted for the 2006 Commonwealth Writers Prize. Little Bee is Chris Cleave's second novel.
Chris Cleave has been a barman, a long-distance sailor, a teacher of marine navigation, an internet pioneer and a journalist. He is 35 and only 5′7″ tall. He lives in London with his French wife and two mischievous Anglo-French children.
George Schaller is one of the world’s most famous
conservation biologists. Profiled in Peter Mathiessen’s classic The
Snow Leopard, he has done research in 23 countries, spending much of
his
time during the half past century in the wilds of North and South
America,
Africa, and Asia. He has studied and helped protect species as diverse
as snow
leopard, tiger, mountain gorilla, giant panda, Mongolian gazelle,
Tibetan
antelope, and Marco Polo sheep. His scientific and popular writings
number over 200 articles and 16 books, including The Year of the
Gorilla,
The Serengeti Lion, The Last Panda, and Wildlife of the Tibetan Steppe.
He
is a senior conservationist with the Wildlife Conservation Society and
vice
president of Panthera, an organization devoted to the conservation of
wild
cats.
Schaller will discuss seven of his field studies
that
illustrate his research and conservation efforts on behalf of some of
the
world’s most beautiful species, from mountain gorillas and giant pandas
to lions and jaguars. He will also discuss his long-term efforts to
help
protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska and the wildlife
of the
Tibetan Plateau.
Free and open to the public. No registration
required.

Join us at the Foothill library for a reading, discussion and slideshow with Erin McKittrick and her husband, Hig, complete with some of the actual gear they used on their journey.
Erin and Hig are environmental explorers with a taste for off the grid
adventure. Erin’s new book, A Long Trek Home: 4,000 Miles by Boot,
Raft and Ski, chronicles their harrowing 4,000 mile expedition
from Seattle to the first Aleutian Island on foot in early 2007. This was an incredible expedition, and we learn about the people they
met along the way, and the conservation issues they set out to explore -
from dwindling salmon populations to unsustainable logging and pebble
mining.
They finished their trek in 13 months, with a lifetime of photographs and experiences behind them, and the anticipation of their first child. They decided to start a new life where their journey ended - in a remote fishing village in Alaska, where they run their online environmental non-profit, groundtruthtrekking.org.
Here is a clip from their journey, so that you can see a bit of what they were up against in order to complete their intended goal:

Brady Udall visits the King's English Bookshop to celebrate the release
of The Lonely
Polygamist.
How can a man with four wives be lonely? The old adage, "Two's company,
three's a crowd" has never been truer than in this uproarious, and
improbably touching tale of Golden Richards, construction boss, man of
God, and bewildered soul. This hapless father of 28 is continually
befuddled: he doesn't understand his kids, his wives, his boss, or his
employees. And then he discovers Huila, who is kind, gentle, and, thank
heavens, soft-spoken. She is also his boss's wife. Every chapter
(sometimes every paragraph) is a vignette, and each is by turns
hilarious and moving. Truly, Brady Udall is our modern-day Charles

of exercises and through processing a series of gestalts, you will (re)discover your higher motivations
and visions for taking up a specific career. Consequently, not only will you become more capable
to deal with stress, job loss, and burnout, but you will better understand your own sense of calling.
Dr. Mark R. Grandstaff, Ph.D., Senior Fellow, James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership, award winning scholar
and former Presidential Adviser, is a pioneer in bringing archetypal reflectivity to businesses and the professions. He

Poet Joel Long and painter Dave Hall present their new work, Knowing Time by Light.
Joel Long, an English teacher at Rowland Hall and a recipient of a master's degree in creative writing from the University of Utah, and Dave Hall, a landscape artist and former Rowland Hall teacher who left teaching to paint, have come together to create a unique look at how poetry and painting inform one another. Knowing Time By Light is Long's second book of poetry and the inspiration behind the show, Seven Poems and Seven Paintings, a collaboration between Long and Hall.
Long will read from a selection of work based on Hall’s paintings and featured in his new book, which will be available at the event.
Long’s poetry has appeared in numerous anthologies, and his book Winged Insects won the White Pine Press Poetry Prize. He received the 2009 Mayor’s Artist Award for Literary Arts.
Hall’s tonalist landscapes hang locally at Phillips Gallery in Salt Lake and Meyer Gallery in Park City.
The poet and artist have roots in the Missouri River country of southwest Montana – an area that has inspired both.
The King's English Bookshop will be on hand to sell books at the Salt Lake City Library's presentation of Farm City: Author Novella Carpenter on Urban Farming.
When Novella Carpenter moved into a ramshackle house in a gritty
Oakland, California neighborhood, she eyed the weed-choked,
garbage-strewn abandoned lot next door. She had dabbled with growing her
own food in the past, but here was an opportunity to take it to the
next level—to experience both the culture and energy of the city along
with a connection to the land and access to inexpensive, well-grown
food. Amidst the commonplace sights of the inner city—gunfights,
squabbles among street denizens, the comings and goings of colorful
characters galore--Carpenter planted a garden and installed a beehive.
But it was only after she added livestock to her lot (first egg-laying
chickens; then turkeys, geese, and ducks; then rabbits; and finally two
300-pound pigs) that she realized she had become a full-fledged farmer.
With Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer, this former
student of Michael Pollan takes the concept of "local food" to the
extreme and delivers an edgy, charming, hilarious memoir about starting a
farm in the toughest of urban environments.
A book signing will follow; and as mentioned Carpenter's book will be available for
purchase the night of the program.

Local author and photographer Ann Torrence presents, complete with slideshow, her book, U.S. Highway 89: the Scenic Route to Seven Western National Parks.
U.S. Highway 89 is a visual guide to seven of America’s favorite national parks, hometown events and quirky roadside attractions linked by U.S. 89. Scenic Highway 89 traces the stories of legendary trappers, missionaries and homesteaders. Widened in the Roaring Twenties to satisfy America’s motoring enthusiasts, but bypassed by modern interstates, the 1,600 mile route from Canada to Mexico retains its back-roads charm. From Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, beauty queens to working cowboys, Ann Torrence’s stunning images and engaging text capture the enduring spirit of the west.
Salt Lake City writer and photographer Ann Torrence drove over 15,000 miles to research and photograph U.S. Highway 89. Her documentary style explores the interplay of the human element and landscape; transformations of culture–what is kept, lost, and reinvented; and the iconography of the American West. U.S. Highway 89 is her first book.

Anthony Bourdain, chef and author of the New York Times bestselling memoir and restaurant exposé Kitchen Confidential, will share the fascinating, hilarious, and sometimes shocking stories behind his life, books, travels, and his Emmy-nominated Travel Channel TV Show Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations.
In his new book, Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook, Bourdain is at his entertaining best as he takes aim at some of the biggest names in the foodie world, including David Chang, Alice Waters, the Top Chef winners and losers, and many more. If Hunter S. Thompson had written a book about the restaurant business, it could have been Medium Raw.
For tickets to the show, call artTix at 355-Arts or go to their website: www.arttix.org.
Jen Yates presents her very funny book Cake Wrecks: When Professional Cakes Go Hilariously Wrong.
In Jen's own words..."A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places."
The evening will start with a slideshow of, yes, hilarious cake wrecks, then a Q&A period and then the judging of the cupcake contest. That right: you make a cupcake version of your favorite Wreck, bring it in, they'll judge it, and you could win fabulous prizes, fame, and the adulation of Wreckies everywhere.
And then Jen will sign books.
Check out her blog: cakewrecks

We are so excited to have James M. Tabor present and read from his new book, Blind Descent. Booksigning to follow.
Long after every other ultimate goal had been achieved — both poles by 1911, Everest in 1953, the Challenger Deep in 1960, the moon walk in 1969 — the deepest cave on earth remained an unclaimed prize. As late as 2000, the “Mount Everest of caves” had not yet been discovered, despite numerous attempts. In Blind Descent, James M. Tabor chronicles the daring journeys of two explorers, American Bill Stone and Ukrainian Alexander Klimchouk, and their teams as they risk everything to make the last great terrestrial discovery.
James M. Tabor’s last book was the international award winner Forever on the Mountain. The writer and on-camera host of the acclaimed national PBS series The Great Outdoors, Tabor was also co-creator and executive producer of the 2007 History Channel special Journey to the Center of the World. Tabor is a former contributing editor to Outside magazine and Ski magazine; his writing has also appeared in Time, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Smithsonian, and many other national publications.

We are so pleased to welcome Kimberley Griffiths Little for the launch of her book for middle readers, The Healing Spell.
Newbery Medalist Richard Peck describes The Healing Spell as an “incantational tale of Cajun magic and gators on the bayou
and of the love and silence between mother and daughter.”
Set in the lush bayou of Louisiana, Kimberley Griffiths Little brings Livie's story to life with power and grace. Twelve-year-old Livie is living with a secret and it's crushing her. She knows she is responsible for her mother's coma, but she can't tell anyone. It's up to her to find a way to wake her momma up.
Stuck in the middle of three sisters, hiding a forbidden pet alligator, and afraid to disappoint her daddy, whom she loves more than anyone else, Livie struggles to find her place within her own family as she learns about the powers of faith and redemption. Livie's powerful, emo-tional, and sometimes humorous story will stay with readers long after the last line is read.
Kimberley Griffiths Little is the recipient of the Southwest Book Award and the author of several novels which have been chosen for many state reading lists. She lives on a dirt road in a small town by the Rio Grande with her husband, a robotics engineer and their three sons.
