SUMMARY:A Long Trek Home\: 4\,000 Miles by Boot\, Raft and Ski
DESCRIPTION:

Join us at the Foothill library for a reading\, discussion and slideshow with Erin McKittrick and her husband\, Hig\, complete with some of the actual gear they used on their journey.

Erin and Hig are environmental explorers with a taste for off the grid
adventure. Erin’s new book\, A Long Trek Home\: 4\,000 Miles by Boot\,
Raft and Ski\, chronicles their harrowing 4\,000 mile expedition
from Seattle to the first Aleutian Island on foot in early 2007. This was an incredible expedition\, and we learn about the people they
met along the way\, and the conservation issues they set out to explore -
from dwindling salmon populations to unsustainable logging and pebble
mining.

They finished their trek in 13 months\, with a lifetime of photographs and experiences behind them\, and the anticipation of their first child. They decided to start a new life where their journey ended - in a remote fishing village in Alaska\, where they run their online environmental non-profit\, <a href=\\"http\://www.groundtruthtrekking.org\\">groundtruthtrekking.org.

Here is a clip from their journey\, so that you can see a bit of what they were up against in order to complete their intended goal\:

SUMMARY:Brady Udall and The Lonely Polygamist
DESCRIPTION:

Brady Udall visits the King's English Bookshop to celebrate the release
of The Lonely
Polygamist.

How can a man with four wives be lonely? The old adage\, &quot\;Two's company\,
three's a crowd&quot\; has never been truer than in this uproarious\, and
improbably touching tale of Golden Richards\, construction boss\, man of
God\, and bewildered soul. This hapless father of 28 is continually
befuddled\: he doesn't understand his kids\, his wives\, his boss\, or his
employees. And then he discovers Huila\, who is kind\, gentle\, and\, thank
heavens\, soft-spoken. She is also his boss's wife. Every chapter
(sometimes every paragraph) is a vignette\, and each is by turns
hilarious and moving. Truly\, Brady Udall is our modern-day Charles
Dickens.

Udall is also the author of Letting Loose the Hounds as well as The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint\, an international bestseller. His work has appeared in The Paris Review\, Playboy\, GQ and Esquire\, and his stories and essays have been featured on National Public Radio’s This American Life. He teaches in the MFA program at Boise State University\, and lives in Boise\, Idaho and Teasdale\, Utah with his wife and children.

SUMMARY:Novella Carpenter and Farm City at the Main Library
DESCRIPTION:

The King's English Bookshop will be on hand to sell books at the Salt Lake City Library's presentation of Farm City\: Author Novella Carpenter on Urban Farming.

When Novella Carpenter moved into a ramshackle house in a gritty
Oakland\, California neighborhood\, she eyed the weed-choked\,
garbage-strewn abandoned lot next door. She had dabbled with growing her
own food in the past\, but here was an opportunity to take it to the
next level—to experience both the culture and energy of the city along
with a connection to the land and access to inexpensive\, well-grown
food. Amidst the commonplace sights of the inner city—gunfights\,
squabbles among street denizens\, the comings and goings of colorful
characters galore--Carpenter planted a garden and installed a beehive.
But it was only after she added livestock to her lot (first egg-laying
chickens\; then turkeys\, geese\, and ducks\; then rabbits\; and finally two
300-pound pigs) that she realized she had become a full-fledged farmer.
With Farm City\: The Education of an Urban Farmer\, this former
student of Michael Pollan takes the concept of &quot\;local food&quot\; to the
extreme and delivers an edgy\, charming\, hilarious memoir about starting a
farm in the toughest of urban environments.

A book signing will follow\; and as mentioned Carpenter's book will be available for
purchase the night of the program.

DESCRIPTION:

Local author and photographer Ann Torrence presents\, complete with slideshow\, her book\, U.S. Highway 89\: the Scenic Route to Seven Western National Parks.

U.S. Highway 89 is a visual guide to seven of America’s favorite national parks\, hometown events and quirky roadside attractions linked by U.S. 89. Scenic Highway 89 traces the stories of legendary trappers\, missionaries and homesteaders. Widened in the Roaring Twenties to satisfy America’s motoring enthusiasts\, but bypassed by modern interstates\, the 1\,600 mile route from Canada to Mexico retains its back-roads charm. From Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon\, beauty queens to working cowboys\, Ann Torrence’s stunning images and engaging text capture the enduring spirit of the west.

Salt Lake City writer and photographer Ann Torrence drove over 15\,000 miles to research and photograph U.S. Highway 89. Her documentary style explores the interplay of the human element and landscape\; transformations of culture–what is kept\, lost\, and reinvented\; and the iconography of the American West. U.S. Highway 89 is her first book.

SUMMARY:Kimberley Griffiths Little and The Healing Spell
DESCRIPTION:

We are so pleased to welcome Kimberley Griffiths Little for the launch of her book for middle readers\, The Healing Spell.

Newbery Medalist Richard Peck describes The Healing Spell as an “incantational tale of Cajun magic and gators on the bayou
and of the love and silence between mother and daughter.”

Set in the lush bayou of Louisiana\, Kimberley Griffiths Little brings Livie's story to life with power and grace. Twelve-year-old Livie is living with a secret and it's crushing her. She knows she is responsible for her mother's coma\, but she can't tell anyone. It's up to her to find a way to wake her momma up.

Stuck in the middle of three sisters\, hiding a forbidden pet alligator\, and afraid to disappoint her daddy\, whom she loves more than anyone else\, Livie struggles to find her place within her own family as she learns about the powers of faith and redemption. Livie's powerful\, emo-tional\, and sometimes humorous story will stay with readers long after the last line is read.

Kimberley Griffiths Little is the recipient of the Southwest Book Award and the author of several novels which have been chosen for many state reading lists. She lives on a dirt road in a small town by the Rio Grande with her husband\, a robotics engineer and their three sons. Kimberley is a favorite speaker at schools around the country\, presenting “The Creative Diary”\, a highly successful writing workshop and has also been a keynote speaker at the NMLA conference. She is a co-founder of SPELLBINDERS\: a national newsletter for Educators and Librarians to create life-long readers.

SUMMARY:Christopher Cokinos and The Fallen Sky
DESCRIPTION:

Utah State University professor Christopher Cokinos presents the paperback release of his fascinating book\, The Fallen Sky. Discover the story behind the Perseids...

The poet and the nature writer are both at work here\, as Cokinos weaves the story of maverick scientists\, daring adventurers\, and stargazing dreamers together and takes us from Antarctica to outer space to tell the tale of how the study of meteorites became a scientific passion. This is an adventure story\, a compelling work of first-person literary journalism\, and a scientific history\, all told through the lives of its remarkable characters--the eccentrics and geniuses who have committed themselves to understanding the stuff of life and death that comes from the sky.

Christopher Cokinos\, an award-winning writer and poet\, and a professor of English at Utah State University\, is also the author of Hope is the Thing with Feathers. He has received the Whiting Writers’ Award\, the Glasgow Prize for an emerging writer in nonfiction\, and the Sigurd Olson Nature Writing Award.

Presented with the Utah Museum of Natural History.
