The King's English Bookshop will be on hand to sell books at the Salt Lake City Library's presentation of Farm City: Author Novella Carpenter on Urban Farming.

When Novella Carpenter moved into a ramshackle house in a gritty Oakland, California neighborhood, she eyed the weed-choked, garbage-strewn abandoned lot next door. She had dabbled with growing her own food in the past, but here was an opportunity to take it to the next level—to experience both the culture and energy of the city along with a connection to the land and access to inexpensive, well-grown food. Amidst the commonplace sights of the inner city—gunfights, squabbles among street denizens, the comings and goings of colorful characters galore--Carpenter planted a garden and installed a beehive. But it was only after she added livestock to her lot (first egg-laying chickens; then turkeys, geese, and ducks; then rabbits; and finally two 300-pound pigs) that she realized she had become a full-fledged farmer. With Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer, this former student of Michael Pollan takes the concept of "local food" to the extreme and delivers an edgy, charming, hilarious memoir about starting a farm in the toughest of urban environments.
