Sparano + Mooney Architecture creates sustainable and thoughtful architecture harmoniously embedded within spectacular mountain landscapes. The studio’s collaborative process responds to
overwhelming natural surroundings with restrained forms and innovative detailing of materials. This first monograph of the firm’s work offers an insightful perspective on developing architecture that
thrives on – and is grounded within – the relationship between concept and place.
This publication presents 10 projects through images, drawings and a series of essays that tie the work to vernacular ideals and land art. Finding meaningfulness in everyday materials rendered extraordinary
through creativity and craft, the book investigates what it means to work within the context of the American West.
John P. Sparano, FAIA, is a founding partner of Sparano + Mooney Architecture. His analytical approach to design, coupled with his expertise in new and innovative application and detailing of materials, has set him apart as a leading architect in the American West. John was recognized with the 2019 Silver Medal from the AIA Western Mountain Region, the highest award given to an architect in this region of the United States. John was educated at the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. and the Architectural Association in London, England. Drawing insight from place, program and client vision, John creates compelling spaces that connect people with their communities and landscape. He is adept at seamlessly integrating new buildings into a variety of high-altitude contexts with heightened cultural and historic significance. Under John’s leadership, Sparano + Mooney Architecture’s design process accentuates collaboration, research and experimentation, and has resulted in a diverse, award-winning portfolio of work. John has lectured and exhibited widely. He has served as the President of the local chapter of the AIA and has won both the Bronze and the Silver medal for his achievements in architectural practice, the highest honors given in the region. John was elevated to fellowship in the American Institute of Architects in 2015. Anne G. Mooney, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, is a founding partner of Sparano + Mooney Architecture.
