This event is free and open to the public and will take place at the Rowland Hall Larimer Center for the Performing Arts, 843 Lincoln Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84102.
Lesley Currier, Managing Director of the Marin Shakespeare Company, will discuss the Company’s innovative and empowering Shakespeare in Prison program.
In 2003, the Company started a weekly Shakespeare class with three prisoners at San Quentin Prison. Hundreds more incarcerated men, women and individuals with physical and mental health issues have now become participants in 13 prisons throughout California. Programs include “Shakespeare,” “Acting for Veterans,” and “Drama for Re-Entry,” which uses drama therapy-inspired exercises to allow incarcerated inmates with release dates to “rehearse” how they want to act when they return home. Increasing also is the number of outside guests attending performances, particularly at San Quentin, where the number of reservations often exceeds available seating.
Doors open at 5 p.m.This one night-only event is sponsored by the Salt Lake Shakespeare Society.
